Japanese Cultural Day

03/08/2021

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

On Tuesday 3rd of August 2021, just as (fingers crossed) the Tokyo Olympics are coming to a close, students from years K-6 will be participating in a Japanese Cultural Day.

Following the Year 6 Japanese Assembly, students and staff will participate in their class groups in a rotation of Japanese cultural activities. These may include art & craft (eg shibori, origami), indoor and outdoor traditional games (eg hanetsuki, taketombo, kendama, fukuwarai, kingyo sukui), sports (tamaire, chanbara), taiko drumming, and Japanese-themed ICT activities (Kindergarten and Pre-Primary activities will be modified). Our wonderful canteen will have on sale some delicious Japanese food options as well.

Students are encouraged to dress Japanese for the day. In the spirit of mottainai (mindfulness about waste) home-made costumes are strongly encouraged. These can be very simple to make and a few ideas are attached, but most importantly please consider whether the costume really is Japanese.

We are seeking parent/caregiver assistance on the day.  These opportunities will include helping to set up early in the morning, providing an extra pair of hands to support the rotations throughout the day, and packing away in the afternoon. In particular, if you have any experience in the Japanese activities listed above, or Japanese language skills that will assist in enriching the experience for our students, we would love to hear from you. A link to volunteer your services is attached.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me via Seesaw or email at Heather.Pitcher@education.wa.edu.au.
