Music

At Lathlain Primary School students have a hands-on approach to learning about the basics of music. Each student from Year 1 to 6 attend 1 music class per week.

Music has the capacity to engage, entertain, challenge, inspire and empower students. Studying music stimulates imaginative and innovative responses, critical thinking and aesthetic understanding, and encourages students to reach their creative and expressive potential.

Music exists distinctively in every culture and is a basic expression of human experience. Students’ active participation in music, individually and collaboratively, draws on their own traditions and life experiences. These experiences help them to appreciate and meaningfully engage with music practices and traditions of other times, places, cultures and contexts.

Students learn about the magic of music by singing, moving and learning to play beat and rhythms using percussion instruments. They learn to compose simple rhythms, lyrics and arrangements in a supportive collaborative way. New concepts are taught using the gradual release model which is common throughout the school.

Lathlain Primary School has a Junior Choir for students from year 2 and 3 and a Senior Choir for students in years 4 to 6.

Year 4 students sit Music Aptitude testing for entry into the Instrumental Music Schools Service (IMSS)program. Both clarinet and flute are offered at Lathlain Primary School.

Visual Arts

Visual Arts incorporates art, craft and design. Students create visual representations inspired by artists work, stories, events and their own imagination. They develop perceptual and conceptual understanding, critical reasoning and practical skills through exploring and expanding their understanding of their world, and other worlds.

Visual Arts engages students in a journey of discovery, experimentation and problem-solving relevant to visual perception and visual language. Students undertake this journey by utilising visual techniques, technologies, practices and processes. Visual Arts supports students’ ability to recognise and develop cultural appreciation of visual arts in the past and contemporary contexts through exploring and responding to artists, and their artworks.Visual Arts at Lathlain Primary School focuses on the Western Australian Curriculum outcomes – Making and Responding. Making in Visual Arts engages students’ cognition, imagination, senses and emotions in conceptual and practical ways and involves thinking kinaesthetically, critically and creatively. Responding in Visual Arts involves students reflecting, analysing, interpreting and evaluating.

Students at Lathlain Primary School explore drawing, printmaking, painting, sculpture, ceramics, collage, mixed media and textiles using a wide range of media. They build upon skills and techniques to produce artworks inspired by artists, art movements and the world around us. Students develop knowledge and skills to plan, produce and present artworks. They explore the visual elements of art (space, texture, form, shape, colour, line, value) in their projects and their projects follow the “I do, we do, you do” model.

Students will be given the opportunity to enter competitions in the community throughout the year including the Shaun Tan Award for Young Artists.
